The Robin Hood Tree: Famous Mountain Maple Cut Down near Adrian’s Wall in Northumberland

In Great Britain, one of the country’s most famous trees was cut down on Thursday night – the Mountain Maple, which grew near Adrian’s Wall in Northumberland.

The police arrested a 16-year-old teenager in connection with cutting down a tree.

Northumberland National Park Authority officials believe the tree, known as the Robin Hood Tree, was cut down deliberately. Superintendent Kevin Waring said it was a “world-renowned monument”, adding that its loss had “caused considerable shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond”.

He added that the investigation is still in its very early stages and appealed to the public to come forward with information that could assist the investigation. “Any piece of information – no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you – can be extremely important to our investigation,” Waring said.

The tree grew in a natural depression near Hexham and was immortalized in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” starring Kevin Costner.

In 2016, it was recognized as the Tree of the Year in the competition organized by the organization “Woodland Trust”.

The National Trust charity said it was “shocked and saddened” by the loss of the maple, saying the tree had been a “significant and iconic feature of the landscape for almost 200 years”.
