Born: February 8, 1961 in Koenigswinter
Job: Veterinarian and President of the Robert Koch Institute
Training: Studied veterinary medicine in Berlin and Munich, habilitation at the University of Giessen
Status: The face of the pandemic
During the corona pandemic, a lot, but not everything, was bad: there is, for example, Lothar Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute. His voice, his calm demeanor, and the courage to face uncomfortable truths, it was all so beneficial that you will almost miss him if the pandemic is actually over one day. While many others were too noisy, too greedy or too panicked, Wieler almost always hit the right note and demonstrated what constitutes authority, namely competence, sovereignty, calm and not: volume. No matter how lonely, stressed or worried you were, in the evening you listened to Wieler’s speech and felt informed and somehow also equipped. He answers our questions for these photos quickly. He only thinks for a long time and wants to exchange ideas: on the question of lateral thinkers. It’s difficult, he says. Because this term has been hijacked, because it actually means people who question alleged facts. No question about it, Lothar Wieler has been an asset in the past few months, but it would be nice if we soon no longer had to see him on TV, but only by chance, for example in the pedestrian zone.
