The rivalry between Glasgow Ranger and Prague S will open its third chapter in the fall. It was decided by the lottery, which assigned Sparta to the group of this year’s European Football League. Again after two years.
At that time, the double match was accompanied by great passions. After the match in Prague, Rangers coach Steven Gerrard criticized the booing of the Spartans’ children at dark-skinned midfielder Glen Kamara, who was sent off.
The Prague audience reflected, among other things, the spring events from the round of 16 of the Europa League, in which Kamara accused Slavist defender Ondřej Kúdela of racist remarks.
There were no adult fans at Letná due to the disciplinary punishment for the racism of some fans in the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League with Monaco in August, the exception being the accompaniment of almost 11,000 children.
Gerrard later expressed surprise and disappointment at UEFA’s verdict not to punish Sparta for unproven racist behavior by spectators. The Scottish side was not willing to understand that the Finnish midfielder caused negative emotions not by the color of his skin, but by his behavior (not only) on the field.
Politicians also intervened in the case, and the chairman of FAČR, Petr Fousek, defended the Letenskýs. Kamara is now at Leeds, where he joined on Thursday, just a day before the draw.
Nevertheless, the story of the twenty-seven-year-old midfielder will be one of the main motives of the autumn duel. Some Scottish fans on the X network (formerly Twitter) immediately started sending threatening messages to the opponent, others remember their former support. “Justice for Kamara,” TenHag Terror wrote. Others have had enough of traveling to the Czech Republic. “Why do we always get a team from Prague,” lamented a man named Ian Milne.
But most of them agree that Letenský should not be a difficult opponent for Rangers. It’s as if they forgot that the Prague team beat their opponents from Glasgow 1:0 at home. “A small Czech club will be an easy bite,” suggests a user with the nickname James, for example.
But as his colleague David Stirling points out, it would be a mistake to underestimate the Czech champions. “It was Sparta who got us into the best basket and, beware, they beat Dinamo Zagreb 4:1. Limassol again defeated Slovan 6:2… We will have to show a lot of quality to advance,” he warned.
