The Riu hotel chain closes eight hotels temporarily in the Canary Islands due to the covid-19 crisis – idealista / news

The company has made the decision to temporarily close eight of the 12 establishments it has in the Canary Islands from next September 13 due to the covid-19 crisis. The quarantine imposed by Germany on all those who return from the islands has ended up sinking Riu’s expectations for the start of the high season in October, according to reports Invertia.

“Due to the drop in demand and occupancy due to travel restrictions imposed from several European countries, including our main market, Germany, we have had to make the decision to close eight hotels on the islands on September 13” , they affirm from Riu to the economic media.

Despite the bad news, the hotel chain explains that will keep four stores open waiting for the epidemiological situation to improve to reopen the rest of the complexes.

In this same situation are its competitors. Right now, Barceló has 11 of the 16 hotels in operation of which it has in the Canary Islands. In addition, the company will assess in the coming weeks the possibility of temporarily closing more hotels if there are massive cancellations after the measure imposed by Germany. In fact, it is something that they have already done in other locations such as the Balearic Islands.

Even so, Barceló remains optimistic and trusts that the wave of infections that the Canary Islands are experiencing will be controlled in the short term. A flattening of the contagion curve could mean that the countries that have banned their citizens from traveling to the Canary Islands back down.

On the opposite side is the group Melia. The chain keeps all the hotels that already were open and They expect the German government to remove the recommendation to include the archipelago among risk areas in mid-September by contagion of coronavirus. Until that time, the company has two hotels in operation in Tenerife, one in Gran Canaria, two in Fuerteventura and another two in Lanzarote.

But not all the news is negative, there are also reasons for hope. In this sense, the Hesperia chain can boast of having reopened its hotel in Lanzarote. The complex is owned by the Hesperia investment group and is operated by Hesperia World under the Secrets de AMResorts brand.
