While the New York Police intensified operations against illegal scooters, immigrants take risks every day by driving vehicles without license plates, ensuring that they do not have the papers to legalize them.
Hundreds of immigrants recently arrived in New York use motorcycles as their main means of transportation and work, as many work as delivery drivers.
However, they do so under the risk of having their transportation taken away because they do not have the required permits.
In 2022, the New York police seized 4,085 motorcycles, this number has doubled in just 9 months of 2023, as there are already 8,607 motorcycles seized.
Outside the Roosevelt Hotel located in downtown Manhattan and set up as a shelter, about 40 scooters are parked.
Their owners live in fear of being confiscated.
“They may take away my motorcycle, I still don’t have the necessary papers, that’s why I’m a little afraid,” commented one of them.
Immigrants claim that they do not have the necessary papers to process permits and license plates.
“For now they are bothering us about vehicle registration, they have come several times but they have not told us what requirements or how they can help us expedite the procedures,” commented another of the immigrants.

On Wednesday morning, delays were recorded after the windows of at least 36 trains were vandalized. Most services are now operating normally, while Line W remains suspended. The MTA estimates that it will be necessary to invest nearly half a million dollars to repair the damage. “We are looking for those responsible because this is a crime for the city,” said MTA spokesperson Joana Flores.
