The Risk of Wolbachia Mosquito Spread in Indonesia: Former Health Minister Calls for Rejection

SHNet, Jakarta – The former Minister of Health called for the rejection of the spread of the Wolbachia mosquito in Indonesian territory.

According to him, the spread of mosquitoes poses a risk to public health and can cause new diseases that are dangerous to the health of the Indonesian people.

He also said that this distribution was an experiment using Indonesian people as an experiment.

“This is called our people being guinea pigs and this is not allowed. “Who is responsible for future risks,” he said at a press conference, in Jakarta, Sunday (12/11/2023).

Also present as a speaker at the press conference was Komjen. Pol. Dharma Pongrekun, Mirah Sumirat, SE (President of ASPEK Indonesia) and Dr. Ir. Kun Wardana Abyoto.

On that occasion, Siti highlighted the involvement of the Ministry of Health in the spread of the Wolbachia mosquito.

“Is there a security and defense permit? Because this concerns the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia. “Don’t carelessly agree to experiments that are directly carried out on the Indonesian people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Healthy for the Indonesian People movement expressed deep concern regarding the government’s program in the form of spreading millions of Aedes Aegypti mosquito eggs exposed to Wolbachia bacteria.

The Healthy Movement for the Indonesian People reminds the Government to immediately stop plans to release 200 million Wolbachia mosquitoes on the island of Bali on November 13 2023, and also in 5 other cities, namely West Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Kupang and Bontang.

This mosquito distribution program in collaboration with the World Mosquito Program (WMP) claims to reduce Dengue Fever, even though the Government has succeeded in controlling Dengue Fever in the last 10 years.

Concerns and demands were voiced jointly by the “Healthy Movement for the Indonesian People”, a movement initiated by the SFS Foundation, the Association of Indonesian Trade Unions (ASPEK Indonesia), and Gladiator Bangsa, and supported by Puskor Hindunesia.

Dr. Ir. Kun Wardana Abyoto, MT. explained that the program to release hundreds of millions of Wolbachia mosquitoes in Indonesia carries serious risks, including risks to public health and the environment.

The reason is, there has been no comprehensive long-term study in Bali, West Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Kupang and Bontang, so there is a risk to public health and the environment, including Occupational Safety and Health (K3).

He added that the release of millions of mosquitoes has the potential to damage the tourism industry and the local economy.

“Who is responsible if something goes wrong and has untold consequences?” he said.

This movement demands deep due diligence and comprehensive evaluation before releasing mosquitoes.

“IP Technology risk investigation via Wolbachia. The public must know and express approval.
We ask for immediate action to protect Bali, West Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Kupang and Bontang. (Ina)
