Yogyakarta: The city of Yogyakarta is at risk of increasing disease cases. Stack rubbish in various places that have not been solved that could encourage an increase in disease during the rainy season.

“It’s diarrhea, skin diseases, but skin diseases are not the same (diseases that can be caused by a lot of waste) as well as lepto (leptospirosis), but skin diseases are not the same,” said the Head of Prevention, Control, Infectious Diseases and Vaccination Department of Yogyakarta City Health Service, Endang Sri Rahayu, in Yogyakarta, Monday, November 11, 2024.

Endang also said that hepatitis and typhoid have the potential to arise from water and waste cleanliness factors. He said that flu, respiratory infections (ARI) and obstructions were also lurking in that situation.

“Then yesterday there were a lot of hiccups, some of them children of primary school age. If we are expecting hiccups, how can we maintain our health,” he explained.

He said that the symptoms of the disease are almost the same in some cases, such as flu and fever associated with mumps and typhus. According to him, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks will be one of the factors that prevent the spread of the disease.

Although the amount of waste is still a problem in its handling, it is considered necessary to educate the public to reduce it by sorting it from the source. In addition to garbage affecting air pollution or unpleasant odors, it also increases the risk of leptospirosis from there.

“Lepto cases are still small, and at this time there has not been a significant increase, so if possible, do not increase it. We also continue to invite the public on how they can reduce waste,” he said.

He said that a healthy lifestyle and adequate food will be an important part of anticipating disease. Then, personal security needs to be increased based on vulnerabilities at the site of operations.

“What’s clear is that you have to wear PPE if you want to deal with waste, or do rehearsals (cleaning) or community service. You can wear gloves, you can wear boots. Because rat urine gets everywhere. So it’s up to the community to be more careful and vigilant,” he said.
