The American city of New York would be in danger because of the rising waters and the accumulation of extreme climatic events. But another rather surprising phenomenon has appeared: the weight of the buildings.
What if New York City went underwater? This assumption could become a reality in the years to come and worries some New Yorkers. Indeed, the phenomenon of rising waters, which pose problems for the whole world, could be the reason for this disaster. Added to this natural disaster is the weight of the buildings, which would be too heavy. The island of Manhattan, where we find the main skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building or the One World Trade Center, would be mainly in danger according to a study led by “Earth’s Future”.
To achieve this result, American researchers from the University of Rhode Island calculated the mass of all the buildings in New York City (1,084,954). And a number came out of that calculation, 764 million tons. A significant figure for the island of Manhattan which is 59.1 km2 and has more than 1.6 million inhabitants. The study showed that New York shows a continuous subsidence about 1 to 2 mm per year on average.
Several cities threatened in the world
New York, which has more than eight million habitats, is therefore likely to disappear in the coming years, due to rising sea levels and the amplification of storms and hurricanes.
« New York is emblematic of expanding coastal cities around the world that are seen subsiding, which means there is a common global challenge of mitigating growing flood risks,” say the researchers.
But this situation does not stop only in New York. Indeed, according to the World Economic Forum, several cities in the world could be partially or totally under water from the years 2050-2100. cities like Jakarta (Inde), Venice (Italy) or London (England) could also pay the consequences.
Worse still, no less than 570 cities could succumb to this natural disaster according to some experts and cities. Including New Orleans (United States), Alexandria (Egypt) or even Bordeaux (France) could be affected.
