The Rising Trend of Reverse Nicknames in Football Dressing Rooms

Friends reveals striking nickname that Brobbey has for Taylor: ‘A trend’

The language in the dressing room continues to change, is the conclusion in the new episode of the Cor Potcast. The current trend is to reverse (parts of) words and names, reveals Sparta defender Bart Vriends. For example, the 32-year-old center defender looks back with a smile on his match against Brian Brobbey, who constantly coached teammate Kenneth Taylor with the nickname ‘Nekketh’. The trend also occurs at other clubs.

Former professional Thomas Verhaar is now an assistant coach at Excelsior, where the latest trend has found its way, just like at Ajax. “I hear that the language in the dressing room is changing. I always like it when letters are moved. Now Kian Fitz-Jim plays with us. He is called ‘Naki’ at training.”

Vriends recognizes the latest phenomenon and immediately responds. “We played against Ajax and therefore against Kenneth Taylor. Brian Brobbey was a striker and he constantly asked for the ball from Taylor. He only called him ‘Nekketh’. It does indeed seem to be a trend.”

Guus Til is also participating in the trend, Vriends knows. “I was recently texting with Guus Til and we were talking about Henk Veerman. Then he asked if I had watched ‘Kneh’. I thought: what’s that guy talking about? But that’s Henk, but turned around. Then he said: ‘You have to move with the times, friend. Because this is the language of the locker room!'”

The 35-year-old Verhaar does not suffer from a generation gap at all. “I think it’s nice. Recently we also had a player who had to play in the middle during training at Excelsior. He just didn’t agree with it. Then he said: ‘This is really Spanish man’. He comes from the region Rotterdam, but said it a bit in Amsterdam style. To then make it clear that it is shit, or not right.”

Amsterdam
The new form of slang seems to originate from Amsterdam. Several rappers from the capital have been turning (parts of) words around for a long time. Popular artists such as Young Ellens and Chivv use the trend in their frequently listened to songs. In November last year it turned out that Quincy Promes is no stranger to the ‘language of the dressing room’.

The Spartak Moscow attacker used the ‘trick’ in an issue of SFB, in which he mentioned his criminal case in the Netherlands. “I’m too teeh in the Netherlands, that’s why they meet (meet, ed.) me overseas,” rapped 31-year-old Promes. When you reverse the word teeh you get hot. In slang, hot is also used as a term for ‘unsafe’. Promes meant that it is impossible for him to meet in the Netherlands now.
