The Rising Threat of Dengue Fever and Global Warming: What You Need to Know

Global warming, which we have experienced in recent years, brings into focus the risk of Dengue fever, a scourge that countries in Asia and Latin America are already facing and which could become, by the end of this decade, a major threat and in the regions of southern Europe and the United States, against the backdrop of high temperatures that favor the spread of mosquitoes carrying the virus.

The global transmission rate of dengue fever is expected to reach a record high by the end of this year, after approximately 4.2 million cases were reported worldwide in 2022. World Health Organization (WHO) experts point out that in many cases of infection, people do not experience any symptoms. Those with symptoms experience fever, muscle spasms and severe joint pain, which is why Dengue fever is also popularly known as “broken bone fever”. In severe cases, Dengue fever can even lead to death.

There is currently no specific treatment, and the vaccine that can prevent the disease is not yet widely available. In view of this threat represented by the transmission on a larger scale of Dengue fever, it is important to prepare the sanitary systems to cope with a possible increase in the number of cases, but also to locate residential areas as far as possible from standing water, which favors multiplication of mosquitoes, says an infectious disease expert of the WHO, quoted by Reuters.

The species carrying the Dengue virus behaves differently from other mosquito species. For example, they are active and sting during the day as well, not just at night, and they can also breed in very shallow water. (I. N.)
