What seemed unthinkable not so long ago is now common practice. Red-white-red legionnaires are simply indispensable in the German Bundesliga.
No matter where you look: Austrians have a say in the German Bundesliga. The ÖFB provided 27 legionnaires in the season that opened on Friday evening with the game between Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich. Up until just before kick-off there were even 28 before Patrick Pentz turned his back on Bayer Leverkusen.
After a complicated and unsatisfactory season with the Werkself, the goalkeeper is loaned out to Bröndby IF in Denmark. In the north, the 26-year-old is hoping for some much-needed match practice. Otherwise, Pentz would probably not play a role in the selection of team boss Ralf Rangnick at the European Championships in Germany next summer.
However, Pentz’ initially unsuccessful engagement in Germany is by no means representative of the appearances of Austrian footballers in the Bundesliga. On the contrary, as in previous years, they remain in demand and, despite the departure of David Alaba from Munich to Madrid in the summer of 2021, also play an important role in the top clubs in the league. Konrad Laimer, for example, took the next step up the career ladder after six valuable years in Leipzig.
