Summer is a time popular with music fans for its many festivals, especially in France. It is also a way for artists to promote their albums. But to “afford” them, you often have to pay huge sums. According to the website 13Are you hip-hop, most renowned urban artists ask between 150,000 and 200,000 €. But the stamp is sometimes much higher for some, like Aya Nakamura. The interpreter of “Djadja” would claim no less than €350,000 for each attendance at a festival, revealed Streetpress in an investigation on August 1.
The negotiations are different from one festival to another, but also take into account the fact that the artist has already toured a lot in theaters or if he has toured festivals. With her 9 million listeners each month on Spotify, the singer born in Aulnay-sous-Bois takes advantage of her aura and therefore continues to promote her album DNK. She made several visits to the Vieilles Charrues de Carhaix, the Lollapalooza (Paris), Carcassonne, Nyon, and will go to Montreal then to London, Brussels, Lausanne or even Berlin by the end of the year.

Ticket prices go up
Some artists who are very popular with the public, who “bring a lot of people back”, such as Dinos, Josman or Luidji, “are not paid as high as they should be”, notes with bitterness to Streetpress Éric Bellamy , the general manager of Nouëva Productions. He adds: “The programmers have a hard time seeing that they are champions and that they have to be paid like champions.” On the other hand, French artists are not paid as well than big international stars such as Stromae, which earned around €500,000 per festival last year. No more than Anglo-Saxon artists, whose fees can reach up to 1 million euros.

But Streetpress reminds that if these stamps can seem enormous, they do not go entirely in the pocket of the artist. You have to pay for the teams, the scenography, the transport or even the hotels. And as costs increase for festivals, this is reflected in ticket prices, with an average price estimated at €79 for festivals that attract more than 30,000 people per day. For example, whether for We Love Green, Les Vieilles Charrues or the Main Square Festival, prices have jumped 14% in one year.
