The Rising Cases of Adenovirus Infection in Infants and Young Children: Importance of Personal Hygiene Management

Recently, patients with adenovirus infection, also known as cold sore accompanied by epidemic conjunctivitis, are spreading mainly in infants and young children, so special personal hygiene management is required. It is pointed out that attention and attention should be paid to infection prevention as summer diseases are prevalent amid the re-proliferation of Corona 19. According to the data of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is known that there are far more than 630 people infected with adenovirus. In 2020, during the Corona 19 epidemic, there were 12 people, but last year, the number soared to 62, and this year, the number has increased nearly 10 times to 636. In particular, infants and young children account for nearly 90% of adenovirus-infected patients.

Adenovirus infection is said to occur most often in infants and young children under the age of 6. It can be infected in the process of changing the bed of an infant or toddler infected with adenovirus, or through respiratory droplets or direct contact with a patient. It is transmitted from towels or toys used by infected children in living spaces where infants and toddlers hang out together.

In swimming pools or water play areas that children prefer the most, you should pay special attention to hygiene management. When infected with adenovirus, it shows symptoms similar to a cold, such as coughing, runny nose, sore throat, and conjunctivitis. It is said that when you wake up, your eyes are stuffed with mucus or your eyes are bloodshot, and symptoms accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea appear. In severe cases, it can lead to symptoms such as cystitis and pneumonia.

Infants, young children, and the elderly with weak immunity require careful hygiene management as pneumonia can lead to death. To prevent adenovirus infection, it is important to practice personal hygiene, such as frequent hand washing and compliance with cough etiquette such as covering cough with an arm.

In particular, experts advise that infants and young children should be taught how to properly wash their hands, cough etiquette, and not rubbing their eyes with unwashed hands to make personal hygiene management a part of life. In a situation where Corona 19 and flu patients are greatly increasing, we request the health authorities to operate a thorough quarantine system to prevent infection with adenovirus. Above all, it is important to take care of your own hygiene.
