Pskov region is the only region of Russia not near the front, where a group of volunteer fighters has started to be formed to fight against “saboteurs from NATO countries”. At the request of “Delphi”, journalist Deniss Kamalagins from Pskov tells how one of the poorest regions of Russia, bordering two countries of the European Union, bet on the ideology of war.
Until February 24, 2022, only a few knew about the Pskov region outside the borders of Russia: neither the ancient history of more than a thousand years, nor the border, nor the status of an important center of Orthodoxy gave the region recognition. Pskov region is now a region with 585 thousand inhabitants, although in 2000 there were exactly 800 thousand of them. Despite the advantageous location on the EU border, the Pskov region loses its position due to its location between St. Petersburg and Moscow, where many, especially graduates, go for the high salaries. In the Pskov region, the average salary is around 40 thousand rubles, at the current exchange rate it is less than 400 euros. The median salary is even lower – only 25 thousand (ie, half of the residents of the region receive more than 25 thousand rubles, and half – less). Armymen (the Airborne Division in Pskov is actually the largest employer) have significantly higher salaries – 60-70 thousand depending on the rank. Those who go to war receive at least 200 thousand per month. It is huge money for Pskov.
“Comrades” and imperialists
And it was the 76th airborne division that made Pskov famous all over the world. It was this unit that was responsible for the attack in the Kyiv region last year, and it is this division that figures in the reports of war crimes committed by Russia in Buch and Hostely. By the way, it was precisely with the losses of the Pskov division that the active phase of the occupation of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics began: in the summer of 2014, Pskov journalists reported that professional soldiers from Pskov were killed in combat operations
