The Rise of Threads: A Twitter Clone – Features, User Adoption, and Legal Controversy

Jakarta

Threads are a new phenomenon that is horrendous. Released this week, the Twitter competitor application immediately shot up in use by many people. Threads have become a new ‘hangout spot’, netizens are busy downloading and using it.

This application made by Meta was released on Thursday (6/7). But the day before, Threads was available via the web and users could get a first look at this new service. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg became the first person to upload a post on Threads. He welcomes the arrival of new users.

It’s called Twitter Clone

Even though it is called a Twitter clone, Threads actually has many differences when compared to Elon Musk’s application. The difference between Threads and Twitter is that Threads users can upload posts in text form of up to 500 characters. In addition, Threads users can also share photos, GIFs, and videos with a duration of up to five minutes.

Meanwhile, Twitter has a character limit of up to 280 characters for regular users. Twitter users who subscribe to Twitter Blue can tweet longer up to 25,000 characters. Apart from photos, videos and GIFs, Twitter users can also embed polls in their tweets.

Currently, Threads does not have a feature such as Trending Topic which allows users to find out what topics are currently being discussed. But Meta says it will add more features to help find threads and creators of interest.

Also, Threads does not display ads on its platform so far. But Meta is already planning to monetize this platform though not in the near future. Currently Meta has chosen to focus on attracting as many users as possible.

Millions of Users

The hype for the emergence of Threads was palpable. Millions of people flocked to download and use it. Only two days since its release, Threads already has 70 million users and this number is of course still growing.

In his post on Threads when updating the number of users, Zuckerberg seemed surprised to see the very fast adoption of Threads. “70 million registrants until this morning. Really beyond our expectations,” said Zuckerberg.

This achievement makes Threads the fastest growing application in the world. The position was previously held by ChatGPT which took two months to get 100 million monthly active users.

Previously Threads was reported to have 44 million users within 24 hours of its release. In addition, Meta’s internal data shows that this social media application is also flooded with 95 million posts and 190 million likes from tens of millions of users.

Sued by Twitter

Twitter began to feel hot seeing Threads, let alone seeing the achievement of getting millions of users in a day. The company owned by Elon Musk even threatened Mark Zuckerberg to sue Meta.

In a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter attorney Alex Spiro argued that Meta used Twitter’s corporate secrets and intellectual property to create Threads.

Spiro claims Meta hired dozens of former Twitter employees to develop Threads. Twitter is known to have laid off thousands of employees after being bought by Elon Musk.

But according to Twitter, most of its former employees still have access to company secrets and other confidential information. Twitter accused Meta of taking advantage of this opportunity and assigned the employee to develop a Twitter clone application.
