The Rise of the Dutch Folding Trailer: Camping Enthusiasts Embrace New Trend

The typical Dutch folding trailer is making a quiet advance. The number of folding trailers has risen to over 100,000. Together with the caravan and the camper van, camping enthusiasts in the Netherlands now own more than 700,000 camping vehicles.

The association Camping and Caravan Industry (KCI) stated that 20 percent more folding trailers were sold in the past year. Unlike caravans and camper vans, these tent trailers, as they are now called, do not have their own registration number.

Nearly 3,200 of them were sold in 2022. This means that the total folding trailer fleet has exceeded 100,000 for the first time. In the Netherlands there are now also more than 180,000 camper vans and another 420,000 caravans.

“Camping cars, there are also more of them every year,” says a spokesman for the KCI. It concerns about five to ten thousand pieces. “It could just be over 200,000 by the end of the year.” These are often imported second-hand cars, because new sales have fallen, just like with caravans.

The modern camper feels more for a camper or folding trailer than for a caravan. “The increase in the electric fleet also plays a role in folding trailers,” says the spokesperson. “Especially with the slightly older electric or hybrid cars you don’t just tow a caravan.”
