“The ‘Alpha Generation’, the age group of elementary school students these days, is a generation that has learned from a young age that artificial intelligence (AI) solves school homework and that meals arrive in 20 minutes when ordered through a delivery app. We expect that the Alpha generation will grow into ‘wise virtuosos’ who seek differentiated competitiveness that AI cannot replace, rather than everyone rushing towards the entrance exam centered on the national anthem.”
Writer Noh Ga-young, a media and contents industry expert who recently appeared on Maekyung Giant TV, emphasized that Korean society should pay attention to the rise of the ‘Alpha Generation’ from now on through the publication of a new book, ‘The New Humanity Alpha Generation’.
Author Noh is a media and content expert who has accumulated experience in various fields, from media strategy and content investment work to OTT (video streaming) business strategy at KT and SK Telecom, etc. for more than 20 years after working at CJ ENM and CJ CGV.
‘Alpha Generation’ is a concept first identified by Australian social chemist Mark McLean, and is a term that refers to the generation after Generation Z, commonly referred to as ‘born in the 90s and 00s’. The ‘Alpha Generation’, which is also the generation of children of millennials born after the 1980s, generally covers people born after the smartphone became popular, from 2010 onward to those born in the mid-2020s.
McLeans analyzed that the alpha generation is “currently the youngest generation, but it is an emerging consumer who has brand influence and purchasing power beyond their age, shapes the social media environment, and influences popular culture.”
Noh, who has an elementary school son who is also an ‘alpha generation’, says that walking the path of a ‘wise virtuoso’ will become more important due to the development of AI in the era in which the alpha generation will live.
Writer Noh said, “The MZ generation studied mainly for national education and was asked to fight for entrance exams to enter medical schools or prestigious universities. “In an era where working hours are decreasing due to the development of AI after ChatGPT, the Alpha generation needs to find their own differentiated competitiveness and practice setting the direction of their lives as ‘wise virtuoso’ and ‘successful virtuoso’. do,” he said.
When the alpha generation enters society in earnest, it is predicted that jobs or roles that cannot be replaced by AI will attract attention due to the expansion of AI. Writer Noh said, “Of course, the role of a high-level developer or AI service planner directly related to AI will be in the limelight,” but “entertainment, sports, and humanities approaches related to human pleasure, play, pleasure, and aesthetics that AI cannot replace. Jobs that can provide added value will also be in the limelight,” he added.
There is also a prospect that the rise of the alpha generation will have an impact that further strengthens existing phenomena such as ‘fragmentation of consumption’ and ’emergence of community leaders’ that have hit the media and content industries.
Writer Noh said, “In the past, corporate marketing was conducted targeting social media influencers such as Instagram following celebrity advertisements appearing in mass media such as TV, while corporate marketing after the rise of the alpha generation is a fragmented community scattered online, small group members. It will develop in a way that community members will create a viral sensation while communicating with the children,” he said. “Since the alpha generation receives 40% more pocket money on average than the Z generation due to the low birth rate, companies are already scrambling to launch services targeting alpha kids. are doing,” he added.
