The Rise of Sustainable Production and Consumption in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – Sustainable production and consumption is a trend in Vietnam that influences the production and distribution system. A 2023 Nielsen IQ survey shows that 38% of consumers consider corporate initiatives and actions to improve the environment to be very important.

Director of the Go/BigC network in Hanoi and the North, Lê Manh Phong, said that in recent years, the trend of consumption sustainability in Vietnam is becoming increasingly clear. According to a recent BigC report, 31% of customers are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products.

In this context, many Vietnamese companies are more interested in developing green products.

Vijay Kumar Pandey, Chairman of the Board of TH Group, said TH is implementing many solutions to promote sustainable consumption, such as replacing plastic bags, spoons and straws with eco-friendly bioplastic. .

In 2022, the TH true Mart system managed to save 19 tons of plastic bags.

Additionally, TH has reduced the amount of plastic yogurt spoons distributed to the market by 50% and expects to reach 100% in the near future. According to calculations, the complete elimination of disposable plastic spoons will contribute to reducing the release of plastic waste into the environment by 130 to 260 tonnes each year.

Since the beginning of the second quarter of this year, several retail, chauffeur-driven car services, food delivery and e-commerce platform companies in Vietnam have started experimenting with the use of electric vehicles.

According to a study by Baemin (a food delivery service), the use of electric vehicles can reduce running costs compared to gasoline vehicles and save 50% on maintenance costs. This helps Baemin reduce its operation costs by up to 30% if it successfully integrates electric vehicles into its delivery service.

Baemin Vietnam director Jinwoo Song said Vietnamese consumers pay great attention to products made from recycled and recyclable materials. Additionally, they tend to choose foods that are low in fat and sugar and high in nutrients. This is reflected in the growth in the number of stores offering green products. In June 2023, their number increased by 15% compared to the same period last year.

But at present, customer demand for environmentally friendly products is still not high, with price remaining the main limiting factor. However, in the future, this trend is expected to develop strongly. When demand increases, more suppliers will appear, which will help reduce costs, make it easier for customers to access products.

The Vietnamese government issued Decision No. 889/QD-TTg, approving the National Action Program on production and consumption durables for the period 2021 – 2030. The Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights (amended), adopted by the National Assembly in June 2023, supplemented the regulations aimed at promoting sustainable production and consumption. -VNA
