The Rise of Social Commerce in Jakarta and Threats to E-commerce TikTok: Government Plans Separation

Jakarta

The government plans separation ecommerce and social media. Business model e-commerce TikTok threatened with being banned in Indonesia. This has received a response from many people, especially those who are directly involved in selling on social media. Not to forget, observers also gave their opinions regarding this matter.

General Chair of the Indonesian Digital Empowering Community (IDIEC) M. Tesar Sandikapura said the social commerce phenomenon is a normal thing in the current era. Moreover, for the younger generation aged 30 years and under.

“Consumers now are mostly 30 years and under because those are the ones who are active on social media and every day they look for entertainment, hold their cell phones, see what’s happening. The effect is, there are those who sell there (social media) because there is a market,” said Tesar.

There are several factors that make this happen. The first is mobile technology where almost everyone already has a cellphone. Then, there is cloud computing which means platform providers no longer experience difficulties. Third, is the role of social channels. Lastly, there is big data which is usually attached to the platform so that the target audience is more precisely targeted.

“That’s why sales on TikTok sell well, because of the algorithms behind it,” he said.

So, because technology tends to be faster than regulations, the government is expected to be able to provide regulations fairly. The government must call all parties to cover both sides.

“Common ground comes when there are discussions like this. But in principle regulations must protect all parties,” said Tesar.

“Sometimes when there is something that has a big impact, affects many people, the ends are blocked. It shouldn’t be like that, think carefully about the stakeholders and look for the middle point. Indeed, finding the middle point takes time,” he continued.

Apart from that, Digital Economy Observer Ignatius Untung Surapati also said the same thing. According to him, social commerce is a natural form of change.

For the first time, people knew what was called classified. Classified is a platform that brings together sellers and buyers, it’s over there. Well, this classified has minimal consumer protection because transactions are carried out outside the platform.

“No one can confirm whether the goods are sent or not and whether they are sent correctly or not, because there is no guarantee. Therefore there is a second business model, namely retail,” said Untung.

From retail, everyone is transforming into the marketplace in droves. The concept is similar to classifieds, only this platform can advertise or promote, buyers can buy, and to improve payments and logistics are controlled by the marketplace. That way there is protection from two sides.

Now, the era is starting to shift slightly to social commerce where people are starting to feel comfortable using social media as well as shopping.

“People can buy things when they don’t plan as long as they are comfortable,” he said.
