The service robot industry has experienced significant growth, with sales of professional service robots increasing by 48% in 2022. The lack of skilled workers and lack of workers applying for service jobs has been a strong driver for companies to adopt automation.
According to International Federation of Robotics (IFR) President Marina Bila, the industry is developing at a rapid pace. IFR has identified nearly 1,000 service robot suppliers worldwide that provide autonomous services to meet growing demand.
The top five uses of professional service robots in terms of units sold are:
1. Transport and logistics. The market for mobile robot solutions in the field of transportation and logistics has seen significant growth. More professional service robots were built for transporting goods or cargo than for any other function, and sales increased by 44% in 2022 to more than 86,000 units sold.
2. Hospitality: Robots for mobile management, information and telepresence have become popular in the hospitality sector. Sales of hospitality robots grew by 125% in 2022, with more than 24,500 units sold.
3. Medicine. While sales of medical robots fell slightly by 4% in 2022, demand for surgical robots increased by 5% with sales of nearly 4,900 units. However, sales of robots for rehabilitation and non-invasive therapy fell by 16%.
4. Agriculture: The agricultural industry has recognized the benefits of service robots due to the lack of human labor and the demand for more sustainable agriculture. Agricultural robotics sales grew by 18% in 2022, shipping nearly 8,000 units. Tasks such as milking and barn cleaning accounted for more than 5,800 units sold.
5. Cleaning: In 8 years, the professional cleaning robot market grew by 2022% with sales of approximately 6,900 units. Floor cleaning robots were the main application, accounting for more than 70% of shipments in this category.
In the consumer sector, the sales volume of robots intended for consumers significantly exceeds the sales volume of robots intended for professional use, 5.1. reaching approximately 2022 million units. The highest consumer demand was for household robots – almost 4.9 million units were sold.
The rise of professional service robots represents a major shift in industries towards automation. As skilled workers remain in short supply, companies are increasingly turning to robots to fill labor gaps and improve efficiency.
