The Rise of Self-Entrepreneurship in France: Motivations, Challenges, and Rewards

The health crisis has prompted many French people to question their relationship to work and their professional wishes. To satisfy their needs for independence and change, many of them have embarked on the self-entrepreneurial adventure. In 2022 alone, 1,071,900 companies were created in France, a real record. This is 17% more than in 2021, reveals theInsee.

What motivates workers to build their own society? How is this career change structured? What about the long term? In a study highlighted by The Tech Review, Espace Auto-Entrepreneur looked into these few questions. The survey was carried out with a small panel of 423 self-employed people which, despite everything, makes it possible to learn more about their motivations.

Freedom and flexibility, main advantages of self-entrepreneurship

Freedom and flexibility are two of the main reasons that lead workers to abandon wage labor in favor of self-employment.

They can control their time as they see fit: appointments, administrative, deadlines… 51.8% believe they have complete control over their schedule, or in which case, in large part for 31% of them. They also have a handle on the clients and partners with whom they wish to collaborate, allowing them to work on projects that truly correspond to their values and desires. 59.8% of the self-employed surveyed feel completely free in choosing their professional assignments.

This freedom also extends to the workplace. 38.5% say the ability to practice from anywhere was a deciding factor in their decision to become self-employed. For 25.3%, it was “fairly decisive”. Nevertheless, almost a third of the auto-entrepreneurs questioned do not take this point into account.

Reconciling professional life/personal life, a major challenge for the self-employed

The boundary between professional life and personal life is very fine, especially when you are independent. Although this status offers the luxury of organizing your tasks as you wish, you can quickly feel overwhelmed. Indeed, self-entrepreneurship often involves not counting the hours to succeed in making a difference in the face of competition, sometimes to the detriment of one’s private life.

According to the study, 32.8% of respondents believe they can fully reconcile their professional life with their personal life and 27% say they can do a lot. 32.2% think they do it moderately. A minority of 8% say they can’t really do it, if at all. This highlights a major point: finding a balance between professional and personal activity is not easy for the entire community of auto-entrepreneurs.

To better reconcile professional and personal life, 63.8% of respondents would like to make changes to their organization, particularly in terms of time management. The ideal remains to set up a structured routine to maximize your performance, and work on the time slots where you are most effective so that you can then take a breather.

A status at the crossroads of challenges and assets

Self-entrepreneurship is a great adventure with multiple benefits: acquisition of new skills, creation of a solid network, new windfall of income… This is why 51.1% of respondents are self-employed full-time and 48, 9% in addition to another activity.

For some, it is a springboard for professional retraining. 24.7% chose this status entirely for these reasons, and 31% partly for this. Freedom, flexibility as well as recognition and personal satisfaction were their main motivations.

Despite these positive points, concerns, mainly financial, persist. 41.4% of auto-entrepreneurs feel capable of adapting to changes in the market, such as inflation, including 20.7% very easily. However, not all respondents are so certain of their ability to adapt: 32.8% believe they can adapt neither easily nor with difficulty, and 5.1% quite painfully. Several elements will influence their answers: the sector in which they evolve, their responsibilities, the opportunities that present themselves to them…

In short, self-entrepreneurship attracts many individuals because of the key elements that characterize it: freedom and flexibility. Despite everything, starting a business is far from being a long calm river. This can be accompanied by many doubts and difficulties, especially from a financial and mental point of view. The most important thing is to manage to land on your feet and, of course, to have fun in this unique adventure.
