At first mocked for accepting to play Barbie’s perhydrol friend, today the Canadian is praised everywhere for his performance, he is predicted an “Oscar”
Fans of the bright dramatic talent of Ryan Gosling were almost shocked when they learned about 2 years ago that he accepted to enter the image of Ken, – the doll, boyfriend of the almighty Barbie, with whom, in the words of the actor himself, “nobody is really play”.
It looked as if the extraordinary talent, who shook the audience with his performances in “The Notebook”, “The Place Beyond the Trees”, “Blue Valentine”, “The First Man” and others, had finally crossed over to the shores of commercial cinema. That Greta Gerwig’s new film “Barbie” is commercial is beyond any doubt – since its premiere on July 21, it has consistently topped the box office and has already brought in revenues that are chasing nearly 800 million dollars globally (155 million of which were accumulated only in the first weekend).
But it is also indisputable that Ryan Gosling makes a brilliant comedic role, because of which they predict him an Oscar, which far more complex and psychologically deep images could not bring him. Critics do not spare praise, many believe that it is he who “steals the show” from the performer of the main role, Margot Robbie. The actor himself does not hide that although at the beginning he did not feel enough “ken-ergy” (a term coined by himself), today the male doll with perhydrolen blond hair, bare chest and bronze complexion, considered by everyone to be the “eternal second plan” , is his favorite role – both funny and quite sad. The song performed by the Canadian in the film – “I’m Only Ken”, immediately broke into the top 40 of the British charts. And soon after, social networks declared it an anthem for neglected men.
Gosling claimed that the film’s script was “the best I’ve ever read”. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, he admits that he didn’t immediately answer whether he would accept the role, but it happened when he went to the backyard and found one of his daughters’ Ken dolls –
with his face stuck in the mud, next to a squeezed lemon
“Then I called Margot Robbie (she’s also the producer of the tape) and said, ‘I’ll be your Ken. For his story to be told.”
Known for proverbial discipline on set, Gosling prepares for his roles with enviable diligence. The case is known when, at the beginning of his career, he was offered the role of the father of the 14-year-old heroine in Peter Jackson’s thriller “The Beautiful Bones” (2009). Only 29 years old at the time, he decided to drastically change his appearance in order to “age”, and in a short time he gained over 30 kg. However, shortly before the start of filming, he was rejected precisely because of his new appearance and the role was given to Mark Wilberg.
Now the situation is completely opposite. To become Ken, the actor (as well as the entire team, for that matter) underwent a drastic regimen of physical training to get iron muscles and abs like concrete. For this purpose, a coach was hired, known for his radical methods and often used by Hollywood for the training of “superheroes”. David Higgins was tasked with supplying the star with
the doll’s infamous 6 belly tiles
(all Kenovians in the film were actually subjected to the regime). In front of GQ magazine, Higgins explains how he worked with the characters from “Barbie”. Off set, Gosling and his co-stars alternated strength training, Pilates and dance to prepare for the choreography.
Specifically for the abs, Gosling was put through a series of exercises, each lasting about a minute, performed non-stop.
1. and 2. Lie on your back and cross your left leg over the right. The legs are raised as high as possible, remaining stretched. In the air, slight movements are made to the left and right, then the legs very slowly descend to the ground. In the next minute, the movements are repeated, but with the right foot on the left.
3. From a sitting position, the feet are placed on the floor, with the knees bent. Begins movement with the torso backwards until tension is felt in the stomach. From this position, the legs are lifted and moved to the left and right with as large a swing as possible.
4. Sits on a rug, with the legs tightly folded to the chest, and the hands covering the shins. In this pose, the back slowly descends back until it lies flat on the carpet. This is followed by standing up to the initial position.
5. Lie on your back with your legs bent at the knees and your feet on the floor. One knee is raised and met with the opposite hand. The pose is held for about 30 seconds, then the leg and arm are changed.
6. and 7. A stretching exercise in which the elbow approaches the opposite knee and then returns to the original position. One minute for each side.
8. Lie on your back, legs raised and bent at the knees. The performer of the exercise must imagine that he is holding an imaginary rope. The bust rises and movements such as climbing the rope are imitated, alternating hands.
On Wednesday and Sunday, the team rested, and on the other days, the Kenovites did 4 strength training sessions one after the other, followed by two training sessions with Pilates exercises.
During filming, Higgins also organized a competition
which of the actors will last the longest in the plank pose
Here, Margot Robbie performed best, managing to hold on for 4 minutes and 10 seconds, followed by Gosling with 3 minutes and 2 seconds. The coach beat everyone with 5 minutes and 32 seconds.
As for the diet, it was not carb-depriving, but processed foods were banned. Short breaks with fasting were also planned.
After this preparation, Ryan Gosling really enters the role of the plastic handsome physically flawlessly. However, this is not to everyone’s liking. In an open letter to the Guardian, a mother complained that films like “Barbie” create a sense of inferiority among teenagers and make girls undergo drastic regimes, while boys become obsessed with pumping up muscles and spending hours in gyms .
