German Defense Minister Annegrett Krampa-Karenbauer has, with his consent, decided to remove Christoph Gramm from the post of head of the MAD, the ministry said, adding that a new head would be appointed soon. Gram has been leading MAD since January 2015.
The ministry praised his work in improving the agency’s performance and proposing reforms, but said he and Krampa-Karenbauere agreed that the next phase of modernization required a new impetus, including new staff.
In recent years, there have been growing concerns in Germany about the spread of right-wing extremism in the army. In light of the fact that the relics of the Wehrmacht are located in an open place in the army barracks, in 2018 the then German Minister of Defense Urzula fon the Leiena ordered the armed forces to break all ties with the Nazi past.
Leiena also had to rename the barracks, which still had the names of the participants of the Second World War. This summer, Krampa-Karenbauere ordered the partial disbandment of the Bundeswehr Task Force (CSC), which has been criticized for right-wing extremism. The German government has agreed on a bill that would speed up the expulsion of soldiers involved in extremism and serious crime.
