According to Eileen Kamtawijoyo, COO & Co-Founder of Populix, the increasingly mushrooming presence of online dating applications in Indonesia shows the role of digital technology in forming new habits for building relationships, even in finding a life partner. However, of the majority of dating app users, only a small percentage progress to marriage.
“Data shows that dating apps are primarily not used to find a life partner, but rather to make friends chatcurious to try, and to have fun,” said Eileen.
Dating applications are generally used in the evening, after people have finished their daily activities.
Most users have used dating apps in the past year or so, indicating that dating apps are a relatively new phenomenon.
Even though they like dating, 37% of users expressed doubt that they would find a life partner on the application.
Only 20% of users succeed in finding a partner and entering marriage or a serious relationship.
People’s doubts and views about the role of online dating applications in finding a life partner cannot be separated from their experiences on the application. The survey revealed that 56% of respondents stated that they had experienced unpleasant incidents on the application.
Some of these unpleasant incidents include profile fraud (71%), use of rude or impolite language (52%), sexual harassment (30%), infidelity (23%), money fraud (22%), cyberstalking (21%), and identity theft or doxing (21%).
These incidents encourage users to be more careful when interacting on the platform.
The majority of respondents said they would check their profile thoroughly before starting a more serious conversation, and make sure not to share personal information with people they just met or include it on their profile page.
Before deciding to meet in person, the majority of users will also build communication and check social media profiles first.
This shows a desire to build familiarity and trust with people they have just met on the app, before going any further.
This unpleasant experience was also alleged to be one of the factors driving a significant shift in behavior among 55% of respondents.
They are willing to pay premium subscription fees for dating applications to meet more convincing and serious application users, as well as to get additional safer and more sophisticated features.
In fact, more than half of respondents are willing to allocate a budget of up to IDR 100,000 per month to subscribe to a premium online dating application.
