In Cologne they probably still can’t believe what happened to them in the last few days. Last Thursday was a devastating combination for FC fans, with the now former successful coach Steffen Baumgart leaving the club and then a transfer ban being imposed, which makes non-relegation a long way off.
In Köpenick near Union Berlin they know how you feel in the Rhineland. There, an Urs Fischer-shaped gap was left among the supporters, which is far from being filled. But we don’t just want to dwell on the negative impressions of the year and talk about the DFB women’s botched tournament appearances, the World Cup being awarded to Saudi Arabia and a zombie-like Super League that simply cannot be killed.
Because wherever something ends, there are always new beginnings. At least that’s what it says on the wall sticker in the yoga corner of our OneFootball office.
The new heroes
And as cheesy as it may be, this is also confirmed in football, which is rich in truisms. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the greatest kickers of their generation, are just about to end their legendary careers at Inter Miami and Al-Nassr, with Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland already has two new fan favorites ready that don’t even feel like they need to shave.
And there are already new fairy tale stories in the Bundesliga. 1. FC Heidenheim gallischesdorf is making its way through the Bundesliga and is preparing to spend at least another year in the upper house. Led by a likeable coaching personality named Frank Schmidt, whose loyalty to the club has probably even asked Christian Streich whether he would like to see something new.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Hoeneß has transformed Stuttgart into a top club that feels like overnight, with a self-image that is otherwise only known from the coach’s uncle. VfB’s attack department is much nicer to watch for neutral spectators.
EM? We’re up for it!
All of this also gives hope for the German national team, which is currently staggering around more ailing than Jack Grealish was the morning after winning the Champions League final. But at some point even the longest crisis must come to an end. Maybe at the upcoming home European Championships, which will mark the great resurrection in the summer of 2024?
And if not, we’ll just have fun anyway, because regardless of the DFB team’s performance, we’re looking forward, like Bolle, to accompanying this tournament for you. Sun, football and an entire continent visiting Germany to cheer on the games all day long. Is there anything more beautiful?
European Championship, Africa Cup, Copa América and Olympics. Together with the club competitions, all of these major events will produce new stories and new heroes. We can’t wait to discover them with you.
Before that, we wish you a wonderful holiday, a happy new year and hope that you will remain loyal to us in 2024.
