The Rise of Michael Bay: From Toy Trains to Explosive Blockbusters

Once upon a time there was an 8-year-old boy who tied some firecrackers to a toy train and filmed the fiery mess he made with his mother’s 8-millimeter camera. The neighbors, all hysterical, called the fire department and that child was arrested. His name is Michael Bay, and now it all makes sense.

Bay began working for George Lucas doing storyboards for Raiders of The Lost Ark. Seeing the result on the big screen, he decided to become a film director. After finishing his studies, Bay took a job at Propaganda Films, and would begin his career making countless music videos and commercials, some of them being extremely famous and even winning awards for best advertising campaigns, including the Coca-Cola the Second World War, that of the Red Cross, but especially that of “Got Milk?”, which to date remains one of the most prolific campaigns.

For this work, he caught the attention of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who hired him to direct his first film, Bad Boys. The rest is history.

Bay would position herself as an icon of pop culture and Hollywood entertainment. Like that fucking mess he created as a child, his cinema is characterized by the excessive use of special effects, explosions and the use of “slow motion”, thus creating a school that, regardless of the rejection of critics, was a success and influence within of the audience and the manufacturing of action cinema to the present day.

Currently Bay, although he has lowered his consistency and “quality” (if he ever had it), has positioned himself as one of the most powerful producers in the industry, being in charge of several houses responsible for action and horror films.

How cool and cool and cool they were that they wanted a Michael Bay top. Well, take your top!

1 – The Rock (1996)

Michael Bay’s only good film, a kind of action and espionage thriller that borrowed the James Bond archetype to add explosives everywhere, and it turns out very well! The inclusion of Sean Connery and Ed Harris (the latter with a great villain) are outstanding, even giving these veterans one of the best appearances of their careers. With certain hints of homage to the 007 films (the Connery thing was no coincidence), Nicolás Cage experiments with the role of the protagonist, adapting excellently to Connery’s shadow and along with Bay’s explosive direction, leading to the development of the story and characters to an incredible climax, one of those very typical of the 90s and where despite its “deus”, “slow motion” and pyrotechnics everywhere, it found a very interesting balance with the acting quality.
