From the very beginning of the existence of computers, it was the system from Microsoft that gained the greatest popularity. It was immediately followed by macOS, due to the thriving Apple company with their Macintosh (later Mac) computers. One of the major players, which, however, never enjoyed as much popularity as the aforementioned solutions, was Linux. After more than 30 years, its share of personal computers has finally started to grow dynamically.
Linux has never ranked as a mainstream operating system, so it could not boast of such a wide range of users as Windows or macOS. Eventually, however, there was a slight twist.
How to start your adventure with Linux? Step by step installation and setup. A guide for beginners
At the beginning, in order to get a general picture of the situation, it is worth discussing the previous shares of other companies. In 2018, Microsoft Windows had an 82% share in the computer market, while macOS 12.33%. After five years, a lot has changed, now the most popular system has “only” 68.15% (so you can clearly see a significant decrease), while the second of the discussed systems recorded an increase to 21.38%. Linux in the same period had only 1.68% at the beginning, while today it is already 3.08%. This is the first time the system has seen such growth in such a short period of time. Of course, Linux dominates the market of all servers, due to its openness and ease of introducing any changes. However, so far it has not been chosen so willingly for personal computers. So what could have influenced this?
Statistics show that players using Linux prefer components from AMD. The dominance is getting bigger
One of the answers is probably on everyone’s lips: handhelds. Recently, devices like Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally have become very popular. Some of them have Linux installed by default, which certainly has an impact on the discussed statistics. However, one cannot deny the significant development of the system in virtually every area, especially in the gaming aspect (which Valve mainly contributed to). However, the upward trend may continue, due to the fact that a large part of the players are now more familiar with Linux and may start to get used to it. Finally, it’s worth noting again that Windows lost a really big chunk of its shares, which might not have been so obvious to everyone.
