The Rise of Libertarian Economist Javier Milei in Argentina’s Presidential Primaries

The right-wing libertarian economist Javier Milei obtained this Sunday 32.31% of the votes in the primaries for the presidential election of Argentina and becomes the protagonist of this election that will dispute the former Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich and the Minister of Economy Sergio Massa.

The opposition coalition Together for Change (center-right) obtained 27.64% of the votes, in the sum of its two candidates Bullrich and the mayor of Buenos Aires Horacio Rodríguez Larreta. The official Unión por la Patria (Peronism), from Massa, has 25.69%, with 64.04% of the polling stations.

These three candidates will face each other in the general elections to be held on October 22with a possible ballot on November 19.

Who are the candidates?

With her disheveled hair and aggressive speech against what she calls “the political caste”, Milei became the phenomenon that shook the status quo in these primary elections.

“The caste is afraid.” “Long live freedom, damn it!” This 52-year-old economist, a libertarian and far-right deputy who proposes to eliminate the Central Bank, cried out at his ralliesallow the free carrying of weapons and prohibit abortion.

A 51-year-old lawyer, Sergio Massa took over the Ministry of Economy a year ago, at one of the worst moments of Argentina’s protracted crisis. Smiling and elegant, he has the ability to present difficulties as achievements, at least among his followers.

67 years old and involved in politics since adolescence, when she was a member of the Peronist Youth in the turbulent 1970s, in full activity of the Montoneros guerrilla, Patricia Bullrich offers herself as the heavy hand without half measures for a country in crisis. “It’s all or it’s nothing”, she cries out in her messages advertising.
