When you hear the word “Fiņķis”, phonetically it seems that it could also be a lowercase generic name – for example, an ancient and important tool of builders, gardeners or carpenters. If it turns out that way, this instrument would have already deserved to be chosen by an artist as his pseudonym, but Thesaurus and Letonics doesn’t remember anything like that, so Helvijs Finķis can be sure that all internet searches with this name will come up against him as the most well-known bearer of this surname and now also a popular stage name.
The history of Latvian popular music is a topic that can be talked about endlessly, if there is an interlocutor who is also interested in it. In the excitement, we almost forget what we intended to talk about in the first place, and Helvy admits that he is like a sponge who tries to absorb all the information, if the fate of its sources is against him. Sometimes he is even alerted by a situation where he hasn’t had the opportunity to experience a kind of internal restart for a while, absorbing new information, attending a lecture or reading a book. For example, the week before our conversation, he had spent the week in Ergļi in a country house with his dogs by the lake, wading through the woods, and then, when he arrived in Riga sweaty, with dirty boots and a muddy car, he always had much more energy than when he woke up in his city apartment and immediately ran to work. .
I got to know Finki not from the hip-hop environment, but “from the other side”.
