The Rise of Kitsch: A Concern for Syrian Artist Myriam Atallah

Yazan Khadour

Syrian artist Myriam Atallah expressed her dissatisfaction and concern about the superiority of kitsch over meaningful songs in the current time. In response to a question about this issue, Atallah pointed to the role of social media in facilitating the spread of kitsch, especially when it includes superficial and contrived content.

She emphasized that in this era, it has become easy to spread anything, regardless of its content or quality, and this includes kitsch, which is widely circulated on social media platforms. The Syrian artist added that she considers this a pathological condition, as there is diversity in everything, and this is a good thing, but the problem is that the focus is on the weakest and most ridiculous state of art, which negatively affects culture and purposeful art that carries educational messages and values.
