The Rise of Children’s Content: The Most Viewed Videos on YouTube in 2023

[ 매드타임스 한수경 기자] What was the first video on YouTube? YouTube co-founder Javed Karim posted “Me at the zoo” on April 23, 2005. Javed Karim co-founded YouTube in February 2005 with former PayPal employees Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

Now, 18 years after its founding, YouTube has become an absolute powerhouse in video streaming, with movies, television clips, and music videos, including personally created video footage, shared in 55 languages.

What kind of content is popular on YouTube, which has become an absolute powerhouse? What Koreans think of most is music like Gangnam Style. In fact, commercial music videos rank among the most viewed videos on YouTube and drive YouTube growth. However, it gave way to nursery rhymes and children’s educational videos.

Visual Capitalist shared a graphic of the 20 most viewed videos on YouTube as of August 2023. Looking at this, it can be seen that the demand for children’s content and videos is increasing. Currently, nine of the top 20 most-viewed YouTube videos are aimed at children.

The most popular video on YouTube is the ‘Baby Shark’ dance video, which was released in 2016 by Korean educational brand Pinkfong, and in January 2021, it became the first music video ever to surpass 10 billion views. Currently, with a total of 13.2 billion views, “Baby Shark” surpasses Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” music video (the most viewed YouTube video ever) by nearly 5 billion.

Other popular music videos featuring children are following closely behind. Johnny Johny Yes Papa (#3) and Cocomelon’s Bath Song (#4) pushed out Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You and Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again”.

Many people cite repetitive lyrics, familiar nursery rhymes, and catchy music that won’t leave your head, but studies show otherwise, according to Visual Capitalist.

According to a study by the Pew Research Center, YouTube plays an important role in providing content for children. 81% of parents with children under the age of 11 allow their children to watch YouTube, of which 35% do so regularly.

This suggests that the huge demand for good children’s content will continue with the demographic change of YouTube users. That is a profitable business. In 2021, Moonbug Studio, which runs the Cocomelon channel, was acquired for 3 billion won by a media company founded by Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, former major Disney executives. If this trend continues, more kid-focused content is expected to make the top 20 in the future.
