The Rise of Brazil’s Beautiful Game: From Military Dictatorship to Football Stars

Let’s put it in context: the so-called “country of football”, when in fact it was just, which is very much, “the country of the beautiful game”, this country called Brazil, left the military dictatorship after a movement that mobilized millions and millions of citizens and returned to vote for president in 1989.

In 1994, the sociologist, and one of the main Brazilian intellectuals, Fernando Henrique Cardoso (FHC) was elected.

In time: before telling how Pelé became minister, an episode of which I was, circumstantially, a witness and intermediary, let’s explain why the country of the “beautiful game”, as the English said, yes, and “the country of football”, no.

Concomitantly with Pelé, and after him, for almost half a century, an unbelievable number of exceptional stars were born in Brazil.

With Pelé, Garrincha, Didi, Nilton Santos, Djalma Santos, Carlos Alberto Torres, Gérson, Jairzinho, Tostão, Rivellino, all from the three-time world champion generation.

After him, Romário, the two Ronaldos, Rivaldo, even the ephemeral Kaká, of the fourth and fifth championship.
