The Rise of Birth Tourism: Pregnant Women Traveling Abroad for Citizenship

A pregnant woman needs extreme care. However, have you ever heard of pregnant women traveling abroad from their home country a few days before giving birth? In fact the purpose of this trip is not for entertainment but to acquire citizenship of any developed country like USA through birth tourism. Wondering what it is? It’s a weird way to get citizenship. Birth tourism is travel to another country for the sole purpose of citizenship.

According to reports, there are several ways to get citizenship in developed countries – marrying a native, getting citizenship after staying there for a long time, and many more. But now birth tourism is becoming very popular.

In 31 countries, including the United States, Canada and Argentina, if a child is born there, the child acquires the citizenship of that country. It is an atakai exercise by parents to take advantage of this opportunity to give birth to their children in any rich country and acquire citizenship of that country. This trend has intensified in the last few years. But now some countries like America have started taking strict measures against this practice.

A few days ago, there were reports of pregnant women from Russia being caught while fleeing to Argentina. The issue of birth tourism came out when they were questioned at the Buenos Aires airport. These women were on their way to Argentina a few days before giving birth. Many companies in America are taking advantage of this opportunity and working as birth tourism agencies. Various media also report that their package includes hotel and medical facilities.

Pregnant women from many countries including China and Russia are coming to America for this purpose. Strict regulations have been implemented in the United States to curb this trend. Now, pregnant women coming on American tourist visas must prove that they came here for any reason other than to give birth. Temporary B-1 and B-2 visas for birth tourism will also no longer be issued. There are also reports that the birth tourism industry is putting extra burden on hospitals.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 12,000 babies were born this way in the United States in 2019. It was 7800 in 2007 and 10,000 in 2017. Many countries have banned it. However, 31 countries still grant citizenship to children born there. Children born through birth tourism are called ‘anchor babies’.
