According to the company, more than 74,000 Android devices around the world are showing signs of being infected by BADBOX. BADBOX isn’t just your average malware; it’s a rather complex and interconnected series of scams.

BADBOX is a network of products sold through the normal hardware supply chain with firmware backdoors installed. Once these products are brought into a home or office, booted up and connected to a network, they immediately connect to command and control (C&C) servers and receive instructions from attackers.

BADBOX is used for ad fraud, residential proxies, fake email and messaging accounts, and the installation of malicious code. “PEACHPIT” is a BADBOX advertising fraud component.

Such attacks have been around for years, but are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This time, it has become clear that BADBOX is quite complex and has a global scale.

Human Security says it has found evidence of BADBOX infection on at least 200 different models of Android devices.
