The Rise of AGI: Implications for Society and BigTechs’ AI Development

When we hear this expression, we immediately think of something global, which controls the entire internet and its respective autonomous devices (cars, robots, computers, smartphones, etc.), and, apparently, that could be it.

AGI, also known as strong artificial intelligence, refers to an artificial intelligence system capable of understanding, learning, reasoning, and acting in ways similar to human intelligence across a wide variety of tasks. In other words, she has the ability to adapt to new situations, solve different problems and demonstrate an advanced level of understanding and cognition.

Unlike conventional artificial intelligence, IAG has the potential to act practically alone, without human command or program, as, in a way, it makes its own decisions and, consequently, actions. It can diagnose diseases, develop personalized treatments, improve hospital efficiency and predict disease outbreaks.

In education it can be used to create personalized teaching systems, offer individualized tutoring and adapt the curriculum to the needs of each individual. In transportation, it can be used to improve the safety and efficiency of autonomous vehicles, optimize traffic and plan more efficient routes. In communication, it can improve automatic translation (this already exists – the newest version of the Samsung smartphone already does this simultaneously), it can also understand natural language and promote human-machine interaction.

Ultimately, the impact of this IAG on society and people’s lives can be significant. On the one hand, IAG can bring benefits in terms of efficiency, innovation and quality of life. On the other hand, there are concerns about the impact of IAG on the labor market, privacy, security and social equity.

The implementation of IAG also raises ethical, legal and philosophical questions about the responsible use of technology and its relationship with humans. Therefore, it is always important to carefully consider the implications of IAG and develop appropriate policies and regulations to ensure that its development and use are beneficial to society as a whole.

Despite these considerations, bigtechs are working intensively on this technology. One of them, Meta (from Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook), announced its full attention to the development of these strong AIs to operate on its gigantic network of people plugged into its social digital systems.

He revealed a bold vision about building artificial intelligence that transcends human capabilities. He also envisioned a future in which generative artificial intelligence will play a key role in machine advancements, enabling the creation of virtual worlds populated by artificial intelligence characters that interact with real users at all times.

This is just the idea (intention) of one of the powerful owners of one of the influential bigtechs that dominate the world. In the same vein, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Apple, Samsung and so many others that we don’t see their brands printed everywhere, are working on their research to increasingly transform the autonomy of machines.

According to some futurologists, very soon, the IAG will dominate (and decide) many things in the daily lives of each of us.
