Yopa was originally a German brand (the name was Jopa) that was purchased by Swiss food giant Nestlé in 1960. Nestlé installed Yopa in Brazil two years after acquiring it. The brand already had experience in markets such as Switzerland, France, Spain, Argentina, Chile and Mexico, when, in 1972, it arrived in Brazil.
Innovation in the market. In addition to different flavors, innovative lines and formats of popsicles were introduced to the market, such as lolly pops, jets and cones. Over the years, Yopa expanded its range of products: it started manufacturing ice creams for consumption as dessert, expanding its presence in the distribution market.
Yopa reached its peak in the 1990s, when it signed the merger with Gelato — the Unilever brand in Brazil. In 1994, after four years of the joint venture, Yopa acquired Gelato once and for all and became the major competitor of Kibon, another brand that was already very popular in Brazil at the time.
At the beginning of 2000, the brand began to lose ground. Market research showed growing preference for Nestlé’s own products. As a result, Nestlé’s strategic response was to gradually replace the Yopa brand with its own corporate identity. The measure resulted in the gradual disappearance of Yopa from the Brazilian market — the packaging began to bear the Nestlé logo.
