It had been flying since 1976, could fly twice the speed of sound, but never made a profit. The flights were extremely expensive and due to the loud bangs, the Concorde was only allowed to fly supersonic over the sea. Ultimately, only 20 aircraft were built, a quarter of which were prototypes.
The death blow for Concorde came on July 25, 2000, when an Air France plane carrying 100 passengers crashed during takeoff.
Since then, a successor to the Concorde has been announced many times and just as often the plans have been shelved again. Yet it is something that several aircraft manufacturers are still working on. Perhaps the X-59 can be a breakthrough.
