The Rise and Fall of Max Payne: A Look at the Series’ Origins and Future

We feel old again. On Saturday, it was exactly 20 years since the release of the action classic of the same name Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, which was created in the Finnish studio Remedy. However, the company Apogee with its famous brand 3D Realms also stood at the birth of the Max Payne series, while the rights to Max were eventually bought by Rockstar Games from Apogee and Remedywho participated in the release of not only the second installment, but also the first installment from 2001. In addition, under the complete direction of Rockstar, Max Payne 3which we saw in 2012.

However, if Rockstar was not interested in the Max Payne brand, everything could have been different. On the occasion of the 20th birthday of Max Payne 2, the boss and founder of Apogee Scott Miller on Twitter he mentioned an interesting fact, which is not a secret, because it has been talked about to a limited extent before, but which at the same time is not a widespread fact. Miller specifically recalled that v Remedy and Apogee originally planned four parts of the Max Payne series.

Each episode was even supposed to take place in a different season and each season – winter, autumn, summer and spring – was meant to represent a new phase of Max’s life and his growth as a character. After the snowy winter original and the rainy autumn duo, whose subtitle The Fall of Max Payne also referred to the time setting, summer would probably follow. Which Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 actually followed in a way, even though it moved from New York to the city of São Paulo in South American Brazil for those summer temperatures.

Miller too he revealedthat originally, the rights to the Max Payne brand were jointly owned by Apogee and Remedy, equally. However, during the development of the second installment in 2003, Rockstar had to offer a large amount of money at the time. In addition, Remedy seems to have wanted to try something else after the completion of the game, despite the four-part plan. That’s why Scott Miller himself agreed to sell the entire Max Payne brand to Rockstar when Max Payne 2 was still in development.

Currently, it is quite unlikely that the fourth volume that Remedy and Apogee once planned will ever happen. Max Payne 3 ended in a very satisfying and pretty much definitive way and according to some reports, it did not sell very well compared to other Rockstar titles. Nevertheless, the brand has a future. Or rather the past in a new form.

Currently, Remedy is developing not only Alan Wake 2, Control 2, the Condor cooperative project from the Control world and a multiplayer free-to-play project with the working name Vanguard, but also Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, i.e. a remake of the first two parts of the Max Payne series, which will be released as a single game sometime in the next few years. It’s powered by Remedy’s proprietary engine called Northlight, with Rockstar once again being the sole publisher. So we will meet Max again, although again during the winter and autumn. We’ll probably just have to imagine what the fourth Max Payne might look like in the spring.
