The Rise and Fall of Holger Rune: A Tennis Champion in the Making

Holder of a Master’s degree in sports journalism, I fell in love with tennis since childhood and have always loved reading the great stories of this sport. Today, I want to tell them about them, take full advantage of my passion and be as close as possible to the aces of the circuit.

World number 7, Holger Rune has all the makings of a future great champion. At only 20 years old, the Dane is one of the most talented players of his generation and he is still progressing. Moreover, he does not hesitate to make the decisions that suit him best since he often demonstrates a strong character. By hiring Severin Lüthi, former emblematic coach of Roger Federer, at the end of last season alongside Boris Becker, we could note his great ambitions. But the Swiss did not last long.

Very well surrounded since his youth, Holger Rune is destined to become one of the greatest champions of tennis today. The Dane has shown that he is capable of playing at an exceptional level but he still lacks the experience to reign in the Grand Slams and stay regular. This is why he called on Boris Becker to get our ideas back in place last October, and also to Severin Lüthiwho accompanied Roger Federer for 15 years. The story is already over since you have to hold on firmly when you are part of the Rune clan…

Lüthi already fired

Come to strengthen the clanHolger Rune already very well stocked at the end of last season, Severin Lüthi embarked on a new adventure after the magnificent story he experienced with Roger Federer. Coach of the Maestro from 2007 until the end of his career, he already left the Dane after only 2 months and 7 small matches. “The timing was not good for Severin, he could travel for a few weeks and that did not offer the continuity that my son needs” said Aneke Runethe very present mother of the 7th in the world.

A difficult player to manage

In recent months, the clan of Holger Rune has already moved a lot since nothing seems to stay in place. Last summer, Patrick Mouratoglou had already been forced to leave the ship due to tensions. Aneke Rune, the player’s mother, is very present to meet her son’s expectations and she notably shared an anecdote which says a lot about the Dane’s temperament, already at the age of 7. “They hired another coach at the club and Holger was watching him. The idea was that this new coach would take care of all the little ones. Holger came to me and said: ‘I don’t want this guy as coach.’ I replied: ‘It’s not up to us to decide, it’s the club that decides. You like playing tennis, so if it’s him, it’s him. It’s not my request, there’s nothing I can do about it.’ And Holger said: ‘Okay, that’s fine, then I’ll stop playing,'” we read in an interview forATP.

A stop

While he was lost in the middle of the 2023 season, Holger Rune regained his senses at the very end of the season after recruiting Boris Becker in his team. The Dane sorted out his little problems but he experienced a slight setback again after his elimination in the second round of theAustralian Open, a defeat which did not please the German coach too much. The only member of the top 10 to play in a tournament this week, Montpellierhe tries to relaunch himself by regaining confidence.
