The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry
The story takes place in Canada and begins in 1996. Mike and Douglas are electronics freaks. They have built a great new device: the “PocketLink”. The thing is a telephone and email machine in one (and calendar and so on). The trick of the device is that it only transports text files, but does so automatically and “immediately”. Although it has quite weak processors (and therefore lasts a long time on its battery), it is fast and responsive.
Technically the device works, but how are they supposed to sell the thing? So the two of them sit opposite the “businessman” Jim Balsillie, who they would like to have as CEO of an ever-expanding company, but who comes from a completely different world. After a few ups and downs, an agreement is reached: the new CEO gets a third of the company.
What follows is pure madness, because their manager has some brilliant ideas and Mike and Douglas are constantly developing new, more and more complete versions of their smartphone, which is now called “BlackBerry” and is hitting business people all over the world like a bomb. Every self-important businessman has something like this (which, by the way, enabled encrypted communication even back then).
Then came January 9, 2007 and Steve Jobs’ words: “I’ve been looking forward to this day for two and a half years. Every now and then a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything.” Oops!
