The Riigikogu Estonian Conservative People’s Party, Estonian Center Party and Isamaa factions are of the opinion that Prime Minister Kaja Kallas should publicly apologize for her statements on the air of Vikerradio and in the Riigikogu briefing, where she compared the opposition’s activities to Putin’s Russia, Adolf Hitler and the KGB.
The joint opposition of the opposition factions of the Riigikogu to the reduction of family allowances raised before the elections and to the speedy push through of tax increases that were vehemently hidden from the voters is a constitutional right. The role of the opposition is not to praise the policies of the government coalition, but to stand up for its worldview and voters. It is completely unacceptable to compare the actions of the opposition with Russia’s behavior before the attack on Ukraine, Germany during Adolf Hitler’s time, and now also the KGB’s negotiation tactics in the Riigikogu briefing.
The political situation in the country and the parliament is already tense, and the coalition’s forceful methods to level the opposition have worsened relations between them even more. In such a situation, the prime minister should make an effort to find a compromise between the political parties, and not add fuel to the fire. As head of government, Kaja Kallas’ duty is to be an example in maintaining political culture and being responsible for one’s words. Therefore, the Riigikogu opposition parties are of the opinion that Prime Minister Kaja Kallas should apologize publicly.
