The Table de concertation du mouvement des femmes de la Mauricie (TCMFM) is launching the campaign “Access for women to employment in Mauricie, a priority!” with the aim of making employers aware of the minimum conditions set out in the Act respecting labor standards, and which particularly affect women, in order to promote fairer working conditions and thus counter discriminatory practices.
In this sense, a series of seven vignettes on rights at work will be broadcast on social networks and in the region’s various weeklies from May 5, until August 4.
“The vignettes address seven different themes including dismissal without just cause, prohibited practices, psychological and sexual harassment, tip wages, termination of pregnancy, deaths and paid leave,” says Joanne Blais, director of the TCMFM.
Funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada, the regional project brings together 17 regional partners from the community and socio-economic sectors. Its objective is to reduce social inequalities between women and men, in particular by breaking down systemic obstacles in the labor market, thereby promoting the employability of women and encouraging their capacity to act.
As part of its action plan, the project must carry out actions to promote fairer working conditions and thus counter discriminatory practices against women at work.
The participation of women in the labor market has made great strides in recent years, admits the TCMFM. However, there are still many challenges to overcome, particularly in a region like Mauricie which has one of the lowest median incomes in the province and where the concentration of female workers in predominantly female jobs is pronounced.
“Women are more likely to encounter structural obstacles in the labor market. In particular, more of them experience psychological and sexual harassment at work. In addition, since women are, in the majority, the main responsible for family tasks and caring, they experience constraints in terms of employment and more often than not have to fight to have their rights recognized. Women are the answer in a context of full employment, ”emphasizes the TCMFM.
The organization calls on companies in the region to put in place innovative measures and practices in terms of employment for women in order to allow their access, their maintenance and their progression in the labor market.
