The Right Time to Take Cholesterol Drugs and Their Effects

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Statin-type drugs are used to reduce the risk of heart disease by helping to stop the production of cholesterol in the heart. According to Harvard Health, statins produce their most efficient effects at certain times of day.

Statins are useful for people at risk for heart disease because they help lower blood levels of high cholesterol. Bad cholesterol or LDL sticks to the inside of the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease. Statins lower high cholesterol by blocking an enzyme that helps the liver make cholesterol.

So, when is the right and effective time to drink it? Evening is the most optimal time to take statins. The health agency explains to most people, cholesterol production peaks at night.

“The body breaks down fluvastatin (Lescol), lovastatin (generic, Mevacor), pravastatin (generic, Pravachol), and simvastatin (generic, Zocor) fairly quickly. Therefore, taking them at night ensures you get enough medicine when you need it most.” their statement, quoted from Express. “The other two statins, atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor) are not easily broken down, so you can take them at any time.”

Are there any side effects? Like all medicines, statins can cause side effects but most people tolerate them well and have no problems.

“You should discuss the benefits and risks of taking statins with your doctor before starting to take your medication,” explains the NHS.

Side effects may vary between different statins. However, common side effects include:
-Headache
-Dizzy
-Sick
-Feeling very tired or physically weak
-Digestive system problems such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, or farting
-Muscle ache
-Sleep problems
-Low blood platelets
