Before taking your blood pressure measurement, you should know what the normal range is and what is the considered range high blood pressure. The blood pressure reading produces two numbers, systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number). This is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
According to the American Heart Association, there are five categories of blood pressure, namely:
1. Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg
2. Height: Ranging from systolic 120 to 129 mm Hg and diastolic less than 80 mm Hg.
3. Stage 1 hypertension: Ranging from systolic 130 to 139 mm Hg or diastolic 80 to 89 mm Hg.
4. Stage 2 hypertension: Constantly systolic at 140 mm Hg or diastolic at 90 mm Hg or higher.
5. Hypertensive Crisis: Higher than 180/120 mm Hg. This is a serious condition and requires immediate medical attention.
