The name doesn’t mean anything to many fans: But Faiq Bolkiah is considered the richest professional footballer in the world. But now he’s looking for a new club. The Portuguese first division club CS Maritimo Funchal said they had separated from the 23-year-old right winger.
Bolkiah, who was transferred from the U23s of the Premier League club Leicester City in autumn 2020, was only rarely used in the table ninth in the Primeira Liga. The contract had now been prematurely terminated by mutual agreement, it said.
Bolkiah was born in Los Angeles, California, to the prince of the Brunei Oil Sultanate Jefri Bolkiah. He is the nephew of the ruler Hassanal Bolkiah (75). The family’s fortune is estimated at many billions of euros. Even big earners like Cristiano Rolando or Lionel Messi cannot come close.
Faiq Bolkiah, who is followed by almost 200,000 people on Instagram, played for Southampton, Chelsea and Leicester in his youth. For the international, Portugal was the first stop outside of England. Now he’s looking for a new challenge. It shouldn’t fail because of the salary.
