Foreign TV series and films rarely appeared on Soviet screens. Officials were attentive to such projects and not all were allowed to air. And one of these shows was the Mexican melodrama “The Rich Also Cry.”
Viewers saw the first episodes in 1991, while the series was first shown in 1979. The audience was delighted with the tragic story of Marianne, who goes through many life failures on the way to her happiness. However, channel executives were not delighted with the series. They considered the project “The Rich Also Cry” a failure and stopped broadcasting after only eight episodes.
This decision caused public discontent. Fans flooded the channel with letters asking for the show to return. Therefore, after some time they had to return the series to the broadcast network and show the remaining episodes.
