“This is the least we can try to do in this tragedy that has taken over the world,” said Kārlis Vanags, the artistic director of the Latvian Radio Big Band. His friendship with Matsu Holmqvist, one of the most prominent personalities in Swedish contemporary music, dates back to 2008. During this meeting, the concert featured compositions from the upcoming album “Dedication to Žobim”, in which the masterpieces of Antonio Carlos Josim, known as the “father of bosanova”, are arranged with a stylistic touch typical only of Holmqvist.
“I really like the path he has chosen, that he has kept the sound of bosanova’s essence, the fragility that is in it, but he has been able to combine it with his approach to arranging – “said Kārlis Vanags.
Commenting on the phenomenon of the bosanova genre, Matt Holmqvist said, “It’s absolute peace for me, almost meditation. The other thing is the wonderful melodies and harmonies. Zhobim was a genius, he’s the best-known composer of bosanova. Others aren’t so familiar.
“It is extremely nice to see such a high-class arranger, orchestra conductor with us, and I am especially pleased to listen to the constant development of the big band, because every time you can feel that the level is growing, especially I think – there was a lot of solo in this concert,” Indriķis Veitners, Head of the Jazz Department of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, spoke about the program.
