The Rhône footbridge opened in Sète, after 10 years of struggle

Originally scheduled for delivery on June 30, the pedestrian and bicycle bridge that allows crossing the Rhône canal in Sète has just been put into service. “I am sorry that the company in charge of the work did not meet the deadlines”entrusting Jean-Pierre Rico, mayor of Pérols. With a length of 180 meters, the footbridge is the largest crossing structure built in the capital over the past ten years. It is part of the vision of Georges Frêche who wanted to see Montpellier turn to the sea, by offering privileged and secure access.

“This footbridge is the result of hard work by the mayor of Palavas-les-Flots and Mauguio-Carnon, to secure access to the beaches.specifies Jean-Pierre Rico. We had a lot of conflicts of use between pedestrians, cyclists and drivers with changes in words that were not necessarily very gentle, sometimes going as far as physical attacks between users of this route.”

A busy road

The route that connects the tram terminus to the beaches is particularly busy. “In the summer, people come in on this way in the winter, it’s the students who walk on the road in the dark on the only unsafe way. The footbridge is part of the “green corridor” project, an ambitious program of the capital that aims to create green areas and biodiversity corridors. “I welcome this achievement which was successful despite several management and budget challenges. For 10 years I have fought so madly for this gate.”welcomes Jean-Pierre Rico. The improvements will continue by renewing the route between the tram terminus and the guard cabin roundabout where a 4.5m wide greenway, with a walking and cycling section, will be created. “The plans have been confirmed, we can estimate that it will be possible to start the work within a year”concludes Jean-Pierre Rico. Ultimately, this vegetated link will provide secure access to the beaches, reducing conflicts of use and reducing the risk of accidents.
