The RFEF eliminates the extensions of the Spanish Super Cup

Change in the format of the Spanish Super Cup. The Delegate Commission of the Royal Spanish Football Federation announced a modification in the regulatory bases and competition rules to eliminate overtime in the Spanish Super Cups, both in their men’s and women’s formats. So, starting in January 2025, if at the end of the regulation time there is still a tie between the participants, the winner will be decided directly by shooting penalties.

With this modification, the RFEF claims to respond to the requests of clubs participating in these tournaments and tries to alleviate the minutes of competition for the footballers as it has already done in other competitions such as the HM the King Cup or the Federation Cup and in the line of what is being implemented in other similar competitions at European and world level.

The formats

The first to inaugurate this new format in the 2025 Spanish Men’s Super Cup will be the current champion of the League, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona as runner-up and then Athletic Club, champion of the 2023-24 Copa del Rey and Mallorca, runner-up in the cup competition. The 41st edition of the tournament will be held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) from January 8 to 12, 2025. Real Madrid has won three of the four editions held in Saudi Arabia to one of FC Barcelona.

FC Barcelona has won its fourth Spanish Women’s Super Cup title after defeating Levante UD at the Butarque Stadium (Leganés) with a resounding 7-0.

In the Spanish Women’s Super Cup the matches will be: Barça – Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid – Real Sociedad. That is, the two finalist teams of the Copa de la Reina and the first and second classified in League F will participate. In the return of this tournament in Spanish women’s football, in which four editions were held between 1997 and 2000, Barcelona emerges as the great winner: it has won four (2000, 2022, 2023 and 2024) of the five trophies in contention.

The agreement with Saudi Arabia is until 2030

In 2020, the men’s Spanish Super Cup changed format. The tournament, which was usually used to open the soccer season, was moved to January. In addition, the two-legged tie between the League champion and the Cup champion mutated into a tournament with four participants with semifinals and a final that was moved to Saudi Arabia. Four editions have been held and the contract was extended until 2030.

Until now, in the event that a match ended tied after the regulation 90 minutes of play, an extra time of 30 minutes was always played, divided into two parts of 15 minutes each. If the tie was not resolved in extra time, the match was decided by a best-of-five penalty shootout. In the event that equality is maintained after those five penalties, it was stipulated that the teams take alternate shots. When one team scores and the other misses, they are the winner.
