The video, in which he attacked the American authorities and compared the president of Ukraine to a rat, was watched by tens of millions of people. But the same people who took Carlson off the air are trying to silence him again.
Carlson is back! The most popular “talking head” in the US (the kind who talk about politics) is back on the air, and its audience has increased tenfold. If Tucker Carlson’s show on the Fox News channel was watched by 3-4 million people, the premiere episode on Twitter gathered 50 million views in less than a day.
The average daily audience of the legendary and very liberal CNN is now only half a million people. This is what Americans’ “crisis of trust” looks like in the “traditional” mainstream media, whose reputation, according to polls, is at its lowest point. Thus, they had the opposite effect in the “fight without rules” with Donald Trump and the participation in the “culture wars” of the minority country. Carlson seems to be an alternative to the bureaucratic “swamp” of Washington, mainstream media, liberal propaganda. Hence the ratings.
Of course, the number of views of a video cannot be directly compared to the average audience of a given TV channel. Increased attention was paid to the premiere of the persecuted “seeker of truth”, and he himself tried to be as counter-elite and sharp as possible for 10 minutes of screen time. This is the same video in which Carlson accused the Ukrainian authorities of destroying the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant and said of President Volodymyr Zelensky that he looked like a rat. It’s so “out of tune” with what’s happening in the American mainstream that it was impossible not to notice Carlson’s premiere.
Subsequently, the viewing frequency may decrease. But anyway, this is only the beginning of a “long journey”, where Carlson, with all his merits and achievements, is generally a “pawn”, whose role is not entirely clear. In any case, with the current layout of the board, this “pawn” is such a dangerous figure that Tucker is now being silenced by the same people who ousted him from Fox News.
These people can be embodied in the image of Carlson’s former employer Rupert Murdoch, owner of “Fox”, media mogul, oligarch and until recently the main enemy of Washington liberals and globalists. Karlsson is also their enemy, but there is one nuance – his counter-elite. Murdoch is, of course, a conservative and even retrograde, but he cannot be a counter-elitist figure. He himself is elite. And if there was a world government, Murdoch would certainly be a part of it.
Carlson has become unpopular because he is too inside, too unlikable to the Pentagon military, too notorious for shaking up elite compromises on such issues as the conflict with Russia over Ukraine and trust in the U.S. electoral system. Murdoch, on the other hand, sees it as necessary to bring the Republican Party closer to the “center” and away from people like Carlson and Trump.
The final straw, apparently, is that Fox has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in a lawsuit filed over Carlson’s allegations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election (even if there was fraud, no one has yet been able to prove it in court, and Carlson’s words also turned out to be unfounded). Such huge losses, even for Murdoch’s empire, cannot be called just a pretext, but they really became a pretext for the removal of Carlson from the air. Not dismissal, but suspension, since the contract with him is still valid and the “truth seeker” is being paid under it. The specific amounts are classified information, but they are certainly colossal.
Money was, is, and will be one of the most effective ways to silence the undesirables. The contract with Carlson is signed until 2025. Until then, he is not allowed to work anywhere in the media, that is, he had to miss the entire US election campaign and the election itself. Not to disturb the “respectable people”.
Otherwise, he will lose his “golden parachute” or even suffer additional losses. We don’t know for sure if there are penalties in the contract, but it was clear to everyone that no media outlet could offer Carlson the same income as Fox. Specifically, none of those who are willing to give the “intolerable kid” a platform for conservative TV journalism.
At first greed prevailed. Carlson went off the air and turned down the biggest offers from small conservative channels they could afford. However, now the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, intervened and Carlson received an invitation to become one of the locomotives of the streaming service of “Twitter”. In addition, there is no contract, the “truth seeker” works as if on a voluntary basis.
Murdoch still considers this a breach of contract – and retaliates with sanctions. Carlson’s lawyers counter that Twitter is just a social network that can’t compete with Fox, and Carlson is just a blogger and a person whose right to express his position is protected by the constitution.
Now a scandalous lawsuit is inevitable, given that the main goal is to get Carlson out of sight for election time. No matter how the process ends, one of the participants in the conflict will certainly not lose: it is Musk.
He can look at the case of Carlson purely as a businessman who brought in a super popular star to promote the project. But Musk is certainly looking at what’s going on more globally, and is claiming a place in that glorious notional “world government” that now belongs to either Murdoch or George Soros, but not him. Musk believes that the current American authorities and the same Soros are leading the planet “in the wrong direction”. And he literally wants to change the fate of the world. To do this, he bought Twitter and experimented with alternative media. To do this, he invested in the Republican Party and the change of power in the White House in 2024. For this, Carlson returned.
Back on the air, Carlson could either help Trump or completely drown him. Despite the fact that he is often called the former president’s “best aide”, he himself is not a “Trumpist” and owes nothing to Trump personally. If he now makes the former president the second most important target of his tales (Biden remains the first), the legend of the honest, incorruptible and non-partisan American television journalist must finally die.
In any case, Carlson has the gift of feeling. And this instinct is fully capable of preventing him from participating in the game as a pawn in favor of the role of “black Peter”. Murdoch is too old and conservative to play like that. But in Musk’s hands, this card can turn into a real trump card.
